$4 million Grant Awarded to Improve Public Transportation on the Island

Washington, DC—The U.S. Department of Transportation today awarded a $4 million competitive grant to the government of Puerto Rico for the purpose of financing the replacement of one of its bus maintenance facilities, announced Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi. Specifically, the grant will allow the Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority (ACT, in Spanish) to replace a leased maintenance facility that is in poor condition with a facility that can accommodate a near doubling of the bus fleet from 33 to 65 vehicles.

“The $4 million federal grant that we have been awarded will mean more certainty for Island residents who rely on the public bus system as their exclusive or principal means of transportation. Approximately 10 million tickets are sold annually to riders of Puerto Rico’s public bus system,” said Pierluisi.

“It is our duty to ensure that our buses are in optimal condition for that the public can rely upon safe and efficient service. This federal grant will help make that goal a reality,” the Resident Commissioner added.

The ACT, a public corporation within the Puerto Rico Department of Transportation,
successfully competed for these funds at the federal level.
